HYDERABAD: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has returned the Telangana government’s proposed list of IPS officers for the post of Director General of Police (DGP), citing non-compliance with Supreme Court guidelines on officer seniority.
With the current DGP’s term nearing completion, the state had recently sent a panel of eight IPS officers to the UPSC for consideration. However, the UPSC objected that some officers on the list had less than six months of service remaining—violating norms set by the Supreme Court.
UPSC has clarified that only officers with more than six months of tenure can be considered for appointment. Among those meeting the criteria are Ravi Gupta, CV Anand, Vinayak Prabhakar Apte, Shivadhar Reddy, Soumya Mishra, and Shikha Goel.
The commission has asked the Telangana government to revise and send back a list comprising only eligible officers. It will then shortlist three names, from which the state may appoint one as the next DGP.
This development comes as a setback to the state’s DGP selection process and adds further scrutiny to high-level police appointments.
