TGHRC orders probe into alleged custodial death of Karla Rajesh

Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has taken serious note of allegations related to the custodial death of Karla Rajesh. It has ordered a detailed inquiry, citing grave violations of human rights.

The Commission clubbed two new cases SR Nos. 4129 and 4130 of 2025—with an earlier complaint (SR No. 3693/2025). It directed the Telangana Home Department to submit a comprehensive report. The next hearing is scheduled for January 12, 2026.

According to complaints submitted by the deceased’s mother, Karla Lalitha, several social activists have expressed concern. These include Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti founder-president Manda Krishna Madiga and former MP Sri Venkatesh Netha. They allege that Rajesh was illegally detained by Chilkur and Kodad Rural Police.

Allegations of torture and denial of legal access

The complainants alleged that Rajesh was subjected to third-degree torture while in police custody. They claimed he was falsely implicated in a criminal case. Furthermore, he was denied contact with his family and transferred from sub-jail to government hospitals. He later succumbed to serious injuries.

TGHRC noted the severity of the alleged violations and observed that the circumstances surrounding Rajesh’s death warranted immediate state-level scrutiny.

Commission seeks full report from Home Department

In response, the Commission has asked the Principal Secretary of the Telangana Home Department to file a full report. This report should detail the incident, the role of involved police personnel, and the medical history of the deceased while in custody.

The Commission’s order reinforces the growing concerns over custodial abuse and its consequences, particularly in rural police stations. The case will be reviewed further on January 12, 2026.
