Hyderabad: Telangana has firmly established itself as the “Seed Bowl of India” and is now aiming to become the “Global Seed Capital,” Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said on Thursday. He was addressing the Hyderabad Seed Conclave 2025, hosted by the Seedsmen Association as part of its 30th anniversary.
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy also attended the event as chief guest.
Tummala commended the Seedsmen Association for serving as a vital bridge between farmers, scientists, industry, and government over the last 25 years. He noted that Telangana now leads the country in quality seed production, generating more than one crore quintals annually.
Out of this, 75 lakh quintals are paddy seeds, 10 lakh quintals are maize, and another 10 lakh quintals include jowar and small grains. Seed cultivation now spans nearly 8 lakh acres, engaging around 3.5 lakh farmers across the state.
Telangana sees ₹2,000 crore in annual seed exports
Tummala stated that Telangana exports nearly one lakh tonnes of seed each year, valued at approximately ₹2,000 crore. He attributed this success to the strict quality standards enforced by the state government, which have elevated Telangana’s global reputation.
Moreover, he lauded the state’s farmers for their discipline and awareness. Their collective effort, he said, has been key to Telangana’s rise as a global seed player.
Speaking about diversification, Tummala highlighted oil palm cultivation. The crop currently covers 1.3 lakh acres, and expansion plans are underway. According to him, this growth will significantly transform the state’s rural economy.
