Hyderabad: After a long summer pause, the buzz returned to classrooms across Telangana as schools reopened on Thursday, kicking off the 2025-26 academic year. The reopening brought a visible wave of energy as students, parents, and teachers stepped back into routine after 49 days of vacation.
With temperatures still soaring, many schools have opted for half-day schedules for the first three days to help students ease into the term without the strain of the heat. Full-day sessions are slated to begin from Monday, June 16, once conditions are expected to stabilise.
Adding a significant new chapter to the education system this year, the state government has rolled out “Early Childhood Care and Education” programmes, introducing pre-primary sections in select schools for the first time. This move aims to give children a stronger grounding before they enter formal schooling.
While the vast majority of schools across Telangana opened their gates today, a handful in Hyderabad have delayed reopening until June 16, citing internal administrative requirements.
The Department of School Education has already laid down a clear academic roadmap. Schools have been tasked with completing the first Formative Assessment (FA-1) by July 31.The official academic calendar sets 230 working days for the year, with students required to keep at least 90% attendance.
As in previous years, schools will have a handful of short breaks built into the academic calendar. The Dasara holidays will kick things off, running from September 21 to October 3. After that, the vacation schedule splits depending on the type of school. Missionary schools will observe their Christmas break between December 23 and 27, all other schools will observe Sankranthi holidays from January 11 to 15, 2026.
The academic year will wrap up on April 23, 2026, with summer vacation beginning April 24 and continuing through June 11.
