Hyderabad: The Telangana government imposed a Road Safety Cess on new vehicles and issued orders through the Transport Department to strengthen road safety measures.
The levy will come into effect from March 1, 2026. Authorities will collect the charge on vehicles purchased on or after that date.
The government will apply the cess to cars, passenger autos and other non-transport vehicles. Officials fixed ₹2,000 for two-wheelers, ₹5,000 for light motor vehicles and ₹10,000 for other categories.
Road Safety Cess to be collected at registration stage
Cars will fall under the light motor vehicle segment. Passenger autos with seating capacity of four to seven persons will come under the higher slab.
Vehicle owners must pay the amount at the time of registration. The Transport Department clarified that officials will not process registration without payment.
According to official estimates, the new levy will generate nearly ₹270 crore in additional annual revenue for the State government.
