Hyderabad: Telangana is set to expand its rice exports to the Philippines, following a meeting between Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Philippines Agriculture Minister Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr.
During the meeting, Laurel praised the quality of Telangana rice and expressed interest in importing up to 2 million metric tonnes of rice and paddy in the next year. He also enquired about the state’s supply of Sona (RNR 15048) rice and maize.
Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy welcomed the proposal and assured full cooperation. He said Telangana would support efforts to deepen agricultural trade with the Philippines.
A significant outcome of the discussion was the Philippines’ willingness to consider importing paddy not just milled rice from Telangana. Officials believe this shift could reshape the state’s export strategy.
The Telangana Minister invited the Philippines Minister to visit the state later this year, and Laurel accepted. A return visit to Manila is also on the cards.
Both sides agreed to sustain the momentum and strengthen cooperation in agriculture.
