HYDERABAD: Telangana has witnessed an unusual decline in power demand, with statewide electricity consumption dropping to just 10,500 megawatts in recent days. Officials from the Department of Energy attributed the decrease to changing weather conditions, reduced agricultural activity, and improved electricity conservation efforts in urban areas.
Until last month, the state’s power demand had peaked at around 14,000 megawatts. However, a clear reduction of 3,500 megawatts has now been recorded. Authorities noted that with milder temperatures, the use of air conditioners and cooling appliances has significantly decreased, leading to lower electricity usage in both residential and commercial sectors.
In the agricultural sector, the availability of sufficient water and the completion of harvesting have reduced the use of irrigation pumps, which is another major factor behind the decline in power demand. The department clarified that this trend is temporary and demand could rise again with the intensification of summer heat.
Energy experts pointed out that fluctuations in electricity demand are common, but the extent of this decrease is notable. They said it has eased pressure on the power grid and contributed to energy savings.
The Department of Energy has urged consumers to continue practising efficient energy use to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the peak summer months. The state government has also directed relevant departments to closely monitor the demand and supply situation.
