Hyderabad: Telangana offered technological cooperation and institutional support to help advance the Tanzania digital economy during a meeting between State officials and a visiting ministerial delegation from the African country on Saturday.
IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu made the offer at the Secretariat during talks with a high-level delegation led by Mudrick Ramadhani Soraga, Tanzania’s Minister for Communication, ICT and Innovation. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across several sectors. They included information technology, tourism, healthcare, life sciences, emerging technologies, digital governance, digital public infrastructure, startups, innovation ecosystems and skill development.
Sridhar Babu said Telangana would prepare a roadmap for strategic collaboration with Tanzania. He said the State was ready to share its experience, technical expertise and institutional knowledge to support the Tanzania digital economy. He added that digital transformation had become a major driver of inclusive social and economic growth.
He said Telangana had built a strong reputation for technology-driven governance and innovation. Therefore, the State could contribute practical models and institutional support. He also said the government would study how to convert the discussions into structured cooperation.
Telangana support for Tanzania digital economy widens
The Minister said Telangana would examine the feasibility of setting up a pharmaceutical distribution hub in Tanzania. The proposal aimed to support the supply of medicines and healthcare products. In addition, he said the State could act as a knowledge partner in several public service and innovation areas.
He pointed to MeeSeva as a model for citizen service delivery. He also cited WE Hub as an example of how public institutions could promote women entrepreneurship. Further, he said Telangana could help strengthen startup and innovation ecosystems through its experience in policy support and ecosystem building.
Sridhar Babu said skilling support could also form part of the proposed engagement. He said programmes in skilling, reskilling and upskilling could be extended through the Young India Skills University. According to him, such cooperation could help build workforce capacity alongside digital transformation efforts.
At the same time, he said Telangana would also study practices followed in Tanzania. He referred in particular to sectors such as the blue economy and tourism. He said the State would explore whether those approaches had relevance for Telangana’s own development plans.
Tanzania digital economy talks move toward MoU
Soraga said Tanzania was keen to work closely with progressive regions such as Telangana to push forward its digital ambitions. He said Telangana’s progress in IT, healthcare, medical tourism, digital governance, startups and life sciences had been inspiring. He added that Tanzania planned to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Telangana soon to formalise cooperation.
The proposed MoU would give institutional shape to the discussions held on Saturday. It would also mark a formal step toward sector-specific collaboration. While no date was announced, Soraga indicated that both sides had moved beyond exploratory talks.
The meeting underlined Telangana’s attempt to position itself as a technology and knowledge partner beyond India. It also showed Tanzania’s interest in learning from regional governance and innovation models. As a result, the talks brought together economic, technological and institutional cooperation under one framework.
Officials from Tanzania who attended the meeting included Fatma Mabrouk Khamis, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Communication, ICT and Innovation, Shukuru Awadh Suleiman, Chief Executive Officer of the Zanzibar ICT Authority, and John Mahundi, Head of Technology and Investments at the President’s Delivery Bureau. Other senior officials were also present during the discussions.
For Telangana, the meeting added an international dimension to its digital and industrial outreach. For Tanzania, the engagement opened a possible channel for cooperation in public digital systems, healthcare supply, startup development and skills training. Together, the talks set the stage for a broader partnership centred on the Tanzania digital economy and related sectors.
