Hyderabad: The Telangana government has taken a major decision in the state’s power sector by establishing a third electricity distribution company. The government issued orders forming the Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company Limited (TGRPDCL) in addition to the existing power utilities.
The state currently operates two power distribution companies—TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL. With the formation of TGRPDCL, the government aims to streamline electricity supply for agriculture and public utility services.
The government appointed senior IAS officer Musharraf Ali Faruqui as Chairman and Managing Director of the new company. Authorities also appointed four directors to supervise the organisation’s operations.
TGRPDCL to manage agricultural power supply
The new company will primarily oversee electricity supply related to agriculture and essential public services across the state.
TGRPDCL will manage agricultural power connections and ensure quality power supply for farmers. It will also process new electricity connection requests for agricultural purposes.
In addition, the company will supply electricity to major and medium lift irrigation projects in the state. Power connections related to Mission Bhagiratha, Hyderabad Metro Water Works and municipal water supply schemes will also come under its supervision.
Officials believe that separating agricultural and major government project loads from regular domestic and industrial consumption will improve administrative efficiency.
The government expects that the new system will help resolve power-related issues faced by farmers more quickly. The move is also being seen as one of the major structural reforms undertaken in Telangana’s power sector since the formation of the state.
