Telangana High Court gives two weeks for reply on local body poll

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has granted the State government and the State Election Commission (SEC) two weeks to file their counter-affidavits in a case concerning the conduct of local body polls.

The petition, filed by Surender, seeks a direction to the SEC to hold elections as per the previously mandated reservation pattern. The matter was heard by a division bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh.

During the hearing, the SEC’s counsel Vidyasagar informed the court that the commission had written to the State government on the issue of Backward Class (BC) reservations in upcoming local body elections. He said further action would be taken once the government responds.

The counsel also noted that the earlier election notification was stayed by the court and that fresh reservations must be finalised before proceeding. The government’s counsel sought three weeks to make a decision, but the court limited the timeline to two weeks.

The court directed both the SEC and the State government to submit their counter-affidavits within the stipulated time and adjourned further hearing. The matter will be reviewed again after the submissions are made.
