Telangana hate speech bill referred to Select Committee

Hyderabad: The Assembly referred the Telangana hate speech bill to a Select Committee after members expressed differing views on its provisions, penalties, and civil rights implications.

The proposed legislation triggered a detailed discussion, as members debated its scope and enforcement. The government drafted the Bill to curb rising instances of hate speech in public meetings and on social media platforms.

Officials said the law aimed to enable strict action against individuals inciting religious or caste-based hatred. It proposed heavy fines and jail terms under non-bailable sections for offenders.

In addition, the Bill sought to empower police to identify and act against those spreading provocative or false content online. However, concerns emerged over possible misuse of such powers.

Telangana hate speech bill faces concerns over misuse

During the debate, opposition members raised objections to certain provisions. At the same time, some ruling party members also flagged concerns over the lack of a clear definition of hate speech.

They warned that vague wording could allow authorities to use the law for political targeting. Therefore, members called for clearer safeguards to prevent misuse.

Considering these concerns, the government decided against immediate passage of the Bill. Instead, it moved a resolution to refer the legislation to a Select Committee for detailed examination.

The House adopted the motion, and the committee will now review the Bill. It will submit a report after examining provisions and suggestions before the Assembly takes a final decision.
