Telangana CEO, EU Parliament official discuss tackling digital disinformation

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudarshan Reddy met European Parliament Director General for Communication Christian Mangold to explore strategies for countering digital disinformation and social media-driven misinformation during elections.

The meeting took place in Brussels as part of a European study tour by a Telangana delegation aiming to learn global best practices for securing election integrity in the digital era.

Focus on digital disinformation in elections

Mangold presented the European Union’s electoral communication framework, which includes monitoring systems for fake news and rapid-response units designed to address online misinformation swiftly.

In turn, Sudarshan Reddy shared insights into India’s electoral process. He also highlighted new Election Commission initiatives aimed at improving access for elderly, disabled, and migrant voters.

Mangold praised India for successfully managing elections on a massive scale, calling it a model of democratic participation.

The discussions reflected a growing international focus on safeguarding electoral systems from the growing threat of digital manipulation and misinformation.
