HYDERABAD: A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Krishna River on Friday morning near Nemalipuri in Pulichintala project colony, Suryapet district, after an attempt to learn swimming ended in tragedy.

The deceased, Kommu Lokesh, was a resident of the Pulichintala project colony and a Class 8 student at a residential hostel in Kapugallu, Kodad mandal. He had returned home ten days earlier for the summer holidays.

According to locals, Lokesh went to the river with his friends on Friday morning, intending to learn how to swim. As he was not confident in the water, he tied empty plastic containers around his waist to stay afloat. However, the containers were not properly secured, causing him to lose balance and sink.

Alerted by his companions, villagers and local fishermen launched a search operation. After an extensive effort, Lokesh’s body was found some distance away from where he had entered the water.

The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the village, with residents mourning the loss of the young boy. Lokesh is survived by his parents and a younger sister.

Police visited the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident.
