Hyderabad: The Supreme Court Road Safety Committee directed Telangana Transport Department officials to conduct fresh fitness checks of RTC buses across the state. Committee Chairman Justice (Retd.) Abhay Manohar Sapre issued the orders during a review meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday.
He instructed the department to inspect not only RTC buses but also private and commercial vehicles. The chairman told officials to seize all vehicles that fail to meet fitness standards.
The committee reviewed the recent Chevella road accident during the meeting held at Hotel Taj Krishna. Justice Sapre questioned the officials about the causes of the accident and sought detailed explanations of the circumstances.

Justice Sapre asked the Transport Department to ensure that every vehicle on the road holds valid insurance, permits, and fitness certificates. He directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to speed up national highway expansion works and complete them on schedule.
He also instructed mining and transport officials to prevent overloaded trucks from leaving quarry sites. Moreover, the committee advised the state government to establish a dedicated road safety fund to support enforcement and awareness initiatives.
Chevella accident reviewed in the presence of top officials
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty explained the reasons behind the Chevella accident to the committee. Senior officials, including Committee Member Sanjay Bandopadhyay, Transport Commissioner Ilambarithi, Additional DGP Mahesh Bhagwat, Mining Director Bhavesh Mishra, and officers from RTC and NHAI, attended the review meeting.
The committee emphasised coordinated enforcement among departments to reduce road accidents and ensure public safety.
