Hyderabad: A student drowned in a quarry pit while swimming in the Jagadgirigutta police station limits on Tuesday.
According to the police and local sources, the victim was identified as Mani Sundar Kumar (20), son of Venkata Rao, a resident of Indiramma Colony in Bowrampet. He was a second-year degree student at iCreate College in Kukatpally.
Earlier in the afternoon, Mani Sundar Kumar had gone to Gajularamaram along with two of his friends. The trio entered a nearby quarry pit for swimming. Unfortunately, Mani Sundar got submerged and did not resurface. His friends alerted the locals about the incident.
Upon receiving the information, the police, locals, and rescue personnel launched a search operation. The body, which had been trapped underwater, was recovered in the evening.
The deceased was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by the family members, and an investigation is underway.
Local residents noted that such tragic incidents recur every year during the summer in the Jagadgirigutta quarry pits. They have urged revenue and police authorities to implement effective preventive measures to avoid further mishaps.
