Water release for SRSP Phase-II to begin on Dec 31: Irrigation Dept

Hyderabad: The Telangana Irrigation Department on Friday announced that water under the SRSP Phase-II project will be released from December 31. This will follow a rotational schedule to support Rabi season irrigation.

As per the schedule set by the SC-IWM committee, water will be released from the Lower Manair Dam (LMD) in Karimnagar district to the Kakatiya Canal at 11 AM on December 31. The department clarified that the release will follow a “warabandi” system. This means alternate weekly irrigation.

The first zone covering 146 km to 284 km of the canal will receive water for seven days. The second zone, from 284 km to 340 km (up to Pragatinagar in Tungaturthi constituency, Suryapet district), will receive water for eight days. This staggered release aims to ensure optimal distribution across the canal network.

Following this schedule, water will first reach the Mylaram Balancing Reservoir. From there, it will flow into the Bayyanna Vagu Balancing Reservoir and then be released to parts of Suryapet district.

The department expects the water to reach end points during the first week of January. It has appealed to farmers to use the released irrigation water judiciously and avoid wastage.
