AMARAVATI: Andhra Pradesh Congress president Y S Sharmila launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent visit to Amaravati, accusing him of making empty promises while neglecting the Centre’s legal responsibility to develop the state’s capital.
Sharmila reminded the public that under Section 94(3) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the central government is fully responsible for the establishment and development of the new capital, including providing essential infrastructure in Amaravati.
In a sharply worded statement, she remarked that Modi’s approach was all “smoke and no fire.” Referring to his symbolic gestures from the past, she said, “In 2015, he touched the soil and made grand promises. Now, he has simply applied whitewash and walked away. The same false promises made ten years ago are being repeated today with prettier words, deceiving people once again.”
She posed a series of pointed questions: “Has the Centre allocated even a single rupee for building the capital? Has it offered any tangible support for Amaravati’s development? Were the commitments made during bifurcation ever given a clear timeline? Has Amaravati been granted legal status by the Union government?”
Turning her criticism towards Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Sharmila said he should tread carefully and examine Modi’s words closely. “He is setting himself up for betrayal again by placing blind trust in the same old promises,” she warned.
