Hyderabad: South Central Railway’s (SCR) Secunderabad Division has launched a month-long fire safety and anti-smoking drive from January 9 to February 8, 2026. The goal is to enhance passenger safety and reduce fire-related risks across trains and railway premises.
Railway officials are carrying out extensive inspections across stations and coaches under the drive. Their focus is on prevention, enforcement, and awareness.
Over 150 fire safety checks conducted so far
So far, officials have inspected 43 SLR (Luggage and Brake Van) coaches, 25 railway yards, washing and pit lines, and 17 railway stations. In addition, they have booked two cases related to tobacco-linked violations of fire safety regulations.
Authorities are especially monitoring the unauthorised carriage of hazardous materials such as gas cylinders and flammable liquids. Officials are also clearing coach corridors, doorways, and pantry areas to ensure they remain obstruction-free. Flame-based cooking and smoking remain strictly banned.
In terms of electrical safety, teams are removing loose wiring, bypassed fuses, and sealing panel gaps. Generator rooms in power cars are under round-the-clock watch, supported by trained AC mechanics and escort staff.
A department-wise breakdown of inspections includes: RPF – 52; Mechanical – 29; Commercial – 28; Operating – 21; Electrical – 14; and Safety – 6. In total, 150 fire safety checks have been conducted to date.
Awareness push under Operation Samraksha
The drive also includes passenger outreach. Under “Operation Samraksha”, the RPF is educating passengers and pantry staff on fire prevention practices. While doing this, teams are checking fire extinguishers and Fire and Smoke Detection Systems (FSDS). Moreover, they are ensuring visible signage for ‘No Smoking’ and emergency instructions in all relevant coach areas.
SCR officials reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on smoking and fire hazards. Furthermore, they continue to issue alerts through public announcements and digital platforms. These are reminding passengers that smoking and carrying inflammable items are punishable offences.
