SCR completes Kavach field trials across 487 Rkm

Hyderabad: South Central Railway completed SCR Kavach trials over 487 route kilometres during 2025-26, exceeding the Railway Board’s target of 402 Rkm as part of its safety expansion programme.

The zone said it prioritised safety measures during the financial year. As a result, it accelerated the installation and testing of Kavach 4.0 across its network. Officials attributed the higher coverage to detailed planning and coordinated execution.

The SCR Kavach trials were conducted across multiple key sections. These included Kazipet–Peddampet (101 Rkm), Malkajgiri–Kamareddi (106 Rkm), Charlapalli–Raghunathpalli (79 Rkm), Guntakal–Raichur (120 Rkm), and Mudkhed–Parbhani (81 Rkm). In addition, loco-based Kavach systems were also tested and commissioned along these routes.

Alongside this, the zone expanded Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) beyond its target. It commissioned ABS over 479 Rkm against the planned 357 Rkm during the same financial year.

SCR Kavach trials boost signalling and capacity upgrades

The ABS was introduced across sections between Kazipet–Balharshah, Vijayawada–Duvvada, and Wadi–Renigunta. This system allows trains to operate safely in the same direction using automated stop signals. It helps prevent rear-end collisions while improving operational efficiency.

Officials said ABS enhances section capacity and increases average train speeds. It also reduces operational costs. The system is currently being prioritised on high-density and Grand Trunk routes within the SCR network.

Sanjay Kumar Srivastava praised the Signal and Telecommunications teams for achieving the targets. He said the success of SCR Kavach trials and ABS rollout reflected strong teamwork at zonal and divisional levels.

He added that both Kavach and ABS would remain top priorities in the current financial year. According to him, the focus will remain on strengthening railway safety and improving network efficiency.
