DELHI: Russia launched yet another deadly missile strike targeting civilians in Ukraine, this time hitting the city of Sumy during a local holiday gathering, resulting in over 20 deaths and leaving 30 others seriously injured.
The attack took place on Sunday, when residents had gathered to observe the festival of Matla. Russia reportedly fired two missiles at the crowd, causing widespread devastation. Residential buildings, educational institutions, and vehicles were among the structures destroyed in the blast.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the missile strike, stating that civilians were deliberately targeted. He said that dozens of people had lost their lives and emphasised the scale of civilian suffering caused by the attack.
Calling on the international community to respond, Zelensky urged global leaders to exert pressure on Russia. He asserted that establishing peace without holding Russia accountable would be impossible.
The incident has once again highlighted the human cost of the ongoing conflict, drawing renewed concern over the targeting of non-combatants in the Russia-Ukraine war.
