RTC clarifies ID rules for women availing free bus travel in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has issued a clarification on the documents required for women to access free bus rides under the newly launched Maha Lakshmi Scheme.

The Congress government rolled out the scheme within a week of taking office, allowing women to travel free of cost across the state in Palle Velugu and Express buses. Since its launch, lakhs of women have been availing the benefit by showing their Aadhaar cards to obtain tickets.

However, following public queries, RTC Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar confirmed that Aadhaar is not the only valid form of identity proof. Women passengers can also present their Voter ID or Driving License, provided these are issued by either the central or state governments.

The clarification came after a social media user tagged TGSRTC MD Sajjanar, asking if Aadhaar was compulsory to avail the scheme. Responding to the query, Sajjanar said women residing in Telangana can still benefit from the scheme by showing any other valid government-issued ID if they don’t have Aadhaar.

Launched by the Congress government, the Maha Lakshmi Scheme is designed to ease travel expenses for women and improve their daily mobility. TGSRTC is overseeing the rollout across its fleet, ensuring that eligible women passengers are able to access the benefit without hurdles.

With this update, the corporation hopes to streamline boarding procedures and encourage more women to benefit from the free transport service.
