Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy called for dialogue instead of confrontation in the Krishna Godavari water dispute and said Telangana preferred talks to settle river water issues.
Posting on X, he said the State wanted resolution, not escalation, in securing its share of Krishna and Godavari waters. When faced with a choice between dispute and settlement, the government would choose discussion, he stated.
He added that the government’s priority remained clear. It aimed to provide drinking water to every citizen and irrigation water to every acre.
Krishna Godavari water dispute: CM stresses amicable solution
During his recent visit to the Devadula project, Revanth Reddy reiterated the same stand. He said States must resolve differences over river waters through dialogue.
He stressed that Telangana would protect its rights firmly. However, it would also promote harmony while pursuing its claims.
The Krishna Godavari water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has persisted since bifurcation. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act made temporary allocations in the Krishna basin.
Under that arrangement, Andhra Pradesh received 512 TMC. Telangana received 299 TMC. However, Telangana has consistently demanded an equal share.
The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II, headed by Justice Brijesh Kumar, examined the issue. Telangana sought project-wise allocations during the proceedings.
Control over Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar dams has also triggered friction. Recently, the Centre placed both projects under the Krishna River Management Board.
In the Godavari basin, disagreements continue over major projects. Andhra Pradesh objected to Telangana’s Kaleshwaram project, citing downstream impact. Telangana, in turn, raised concerns over the height and submergence effect of the Polavaram project.
Telangana has also approached the Union Jal Shakti Ministry regarding the proposed Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar project. The response of Andhra Pradesh to the Chief Minister’s latest remarks remains awaited.
