Ranganath vows action against Yakutpura manhole negligence

Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Friday vowed strict action in response to the Yakutpura manhole negligence incident, where a child fell into an open drain. He said the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) takes full responsibility and will ensure such incidents do not recur.

The child, who was on the way to school, fell into an uncovered manhole in Yakutpura on September 11. The incident triggered public anger, with sanitation staff blamed for negligence. Quick action by the child’s mother and local residents helped rescue the child without injury.

Ranganath said HYDRAA’s monsoon emergency team had failed in its duty. He confirmed that an investigation was underway and that anyone found responsible would face serious consequences.

The Commissioner stated that officials from the water board had already been cautioned. He added that a criminal case would be filed against anyone found leaving a manhole uncovered, with penalties that could include fines or imprisonment.

Residents questioned what might have happened if the child had not been rescued in time. Ranganath assured that measures were being implemented to secure all manhole covers across the city to prevent future accidents.
