Centre backs pharma export growth at Hyderabad Chintan Shivir

Hyderabad: The Centre reaffirmed support for pharma export growth at a high-level Chintan Shivir held in Hyderabad on Saturday. Officials stressed innovation, quality and global competitiveness in the pharmaceutical sector.

Rajesh Agrawal chaired the inaugural session of the event, which the Department of Commerce organised along with Pharmexcil. Senior officials, including representatives from the Department of Pharmaceuticals, attended the meeting.

The Commerce Secretary highlighted the strong growth trajectory of India’s pharmaceutical industry. He said India accounts for nearly 18–19% of the global population, making it a large and expanding domestic market. Moreover, he noted that rising incomes would further increase healthcare demand.

He said the industry, valued at about $60 billion, derives nearly half its revenue from exports. Therefore, India has emerged as the “pharmacy of the world” due to scale, cost competitiveness and leadership in generic medicines.

Pharma export growth focus shifts to innovation

The Centre stressed that pharma export growth must move from volume to value-driven expansion. Officials called for increased focus on innovation, biologics and biosimilars.

They also emphasised the need for self-reliance and resilient supply chains. In addition, they highlighted the importance of maintaining high quality standards amid global uncertainties.

The discussions aligned with the vision of Narendra Modi to position India as a global healthcare innovation hub. Officials said policy support would continue to strengthen the sector’s global standing.

Pharma export growth linked to policy and technology

The Shivir also addressed regulatory challenges and export expansion strategies. Participants discussed the role of artificial intelligence in improving efficiency across the pharmaceutical value chain.

Officials announced the launch of iPHEX 2026, scheduled from September 7 to 9. The event will serve as a platform to promote Indian pharmaceutical exports globally.

The pharma export growth discussions will contribute to future policy measures. These measures aim to enhance export competitiveness and strengthen India’s position in global markets.

The event concluded with detailed interactions between industry and government stakeholders. These engagements focused on reinforcing India’s leadership as the “pharmacy of the world.”
