Kavitha demands OBC sub quota in women reservation bill

Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president Kalvakuntla Kavitha demanded inclusion of an OBC sub quota in the women’s reservation bill and stressed the need for social justice in the legislature. The quota issue, she said, remains critical for equitable representation.

She said a 33 per cent reservation for women holds importance. However, she argued that excluding the OBC sub quota weakens inclusive representation. Moreover, she said ignoring OBC women denies justice to a majority population.

OBC sub quota demand gains political traction

Kavitha said only “reservation within reservation” can ensure true social justice. Therefore, she stressed the need for internal categorisation in quotas.

She warned that the Centre cannot move ahead without including the OBC sub quota. Consequently, she said her organisation will launch fresh protests if needed.

She recalled that her group united political parties and women’s organisations earlier for the bill. In addition, she said they held a protest at Jantar Mantar to push for it.

Kavitha questioned how the system can ensure justice without giving representation to OBC women. Meanwhile, she pointed out that SC and ST women already receive constitutionally mandated reservations.

She called on leaders across parties and OBC women representatives to unite on the issue. As a result, she said collective pressure can secure fair representation.

Kavitha added that her organisation and allied groups pushed the women’s reservation bill forward through sustained efforts. She reiterated that the fight will continue until authorities include the OBC sub quota.
