Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about a woman being tied to a tree and brutally assaulted by a local moneylender in Narayanapuram village of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh.
The incident reportedly took place on June 16 in Kuppam mandal. The victim was allegedly beaten in full public view after her husband failed to repay a loan of ₹80,000 borrowed three years ago.
In a statement, the Commission said the report, if accurate, raises serious concerns about human rights violations. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The report must include information on the actions taken against the accused as well as details of the safety and rehabilitation measures provided to the woman, the Commission said.
Local villagers were said to have intervened and rescued the woman during the incident.
