BJP candidate dies during municipal election counting in Mancherial

Hyderabad: A tragic incident struck Mancherial district during municipal election counting as BJP candidate Yellamma from Lakshettipet’s 10th ward died after prolonged illness.

The death occurred even as municipal election counting began across Telangana and candidates awaited results. Yellamma had been unwell for the past few days. However, her condition worsened on counting day, and she died before the declaration of results. The news left her family members and BJP leaders in shock.

Rules apply during municipal election counting despite BJP candidate death

Meanwhile, confusion arose over the status of the election process following her death. However, officials clarified that municipal election counting would continue as per schedule. According to election rules, the death of a candidate after polling does not halt counting.

If Yellamma secures a majority of votes in the ongoing municipal election counting, authorities will formally declare her elected. However, the seat will not be filled. Instead, officials will declare the ward vacant and conduct a by-election later. On the other hand, if any other candidate wins, the Returning Officer will declare that candidate elected.

Authorities continued counting under tight security arrangements.
