Hyderabad: Maulana Azad National Urdu University has pulled the plug on its five-year academic partnership with Turkey’s Yunus Emre Institute, citing Ankara’s support for Pakistan’s terror-linked activities. The cancellation is with immediate effect.
University authorities said the move was a direct protest against Turkey’s open backing of Pakistan amid escalating Indo-Pak tensions. The decision, taken at the institutional level, severs ties formalised just last year.
The now-terminated MoU, signed on 2 January 2024, had paved the way for a Turkish language diploma under the School of Languages, Linguistics & Indology. A Turkish professor had been appointed to run the programme. That professor, according to officials, has already returned to Turkey.
No word yet on what happens to enrolled students or whether the diploma will continue under a new arrangement.
