HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu has filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the process of Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorisation.
In the petition, it was argued that the sub-categorisation was carried out based on the recommendations of a one-man commission and relied on 2011 census data, which no longer accurately reflects the present-day socio-economic conditions. The petition stated that the government had failed to collect updated data necessary for a fair and accurate assessment.
While admitting the petition for hearing, a division bench led by Acting Chief Justice Renuka Aiyar questioned whether the SC sub-categorisation process had been carried out in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines.
Appearing for the petitioners, senior advocate D.V. Seetharam Murthy argued that, as per the Supreme Court’s directives, comprehensive and updated data is crucial for determining backwardness among SC communities.
The High Court agreed to hear the matter and directed the state government to file counter-affidavits. Further hearing on the case was adjourned.
