Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath directed officials to complete arrangements for the Nalla Cheruvu inauguration in Kukatpally as the state government prepares for Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to formally open the restored lake.
Ranganath inspected the Kukatpally lake on Wednesday and reviewed the development works carried out under HYDRAA’s lake restoration programme. The Nalla Cheruvu inauguration is expected to take place after March 6 once preparations are completed.
Officials said HYDRA had taken up restoration work on six lakes in the first phase. The Chief Minister already inaugurated Bathukamma Kunta earlier. Authorities now plan to open two more lakes, including Bamruknuddoula Cheruvu in the Old City and Kukatpally’s Nalla Cheruvu, within the next few days.
During the visit, the commissioner reviewed landscaping and infrastructure works around the lake.

Ranganath instructed officials to plant a large number of shade trees along the lake surroundings. He also asked them to develop parks and improve public spaces around the water body before the Nalla Cheruvu inauguration.
The commissioner discussed plans with Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials regarding the establishment of a sewage treatment plant (STP) to ensure clean inflow into the lake.
He emphasised that proper sewage management would help maintain water quality and sustain the ecological balance of the lake.
Nalla Cheruvu inauguration expected to boost recreation
Officials said HYDRAA initiated the restoration project in September 2024. At that time, the initiative faced criticism from several quarters. However, authorities said many residents now appreciated the transformation of the lake area.
According to officials, people travel from five to six kilometres away to visit the lake for walking, recreation and relaxation.
Ranganath said more facilities would soon be added to improve the area further. Plans include developing children’s play areas, public parks and open gyms around the lake.
He said the lake would become more attractive once all development works were completed.
The commissioner also noted that restoration of the lake would help control urban flooding and improve groundwater levels in surrounding neighbourhoods.
