Hyderabad: The Kazipet railway division demand was raised on Wednesday, as K. T. Rama Rao urged the Centre to immediately establish a new railway division headquartered at Kazipet.
In a letter to Ashwini Vaishnaw, he said ongoing restructuring within South Central Railway and the operationalisation of South Coast Railway had increased pressure on the Secunderabad Division.
He said the Secunderabad Division currently covered 2,755 track kilometres. Moreover, it was expected to expand to about 3,150 track kilometres with new double line sections between Wadi–Raichur and Vishnupuram–Bibinagar.
He said this exceeded the optimal administrative limits followed across Indian Railways divisions. In comparison, Vijayawada and Guntakal divisions operated around 2,200 kilometres, while Guntur division remained under 900 kilometres.
Kazipet railway division demand highlights operational imbalance
KTR said the Kazipet railway division demand was both logical and necessary to address the imbalance. He proposed that the new division include sections such as Kazipet–Balharshah, Peddapalli–Nizamabad, Kazipet–Yerrupalem, Dornakal–Manuguru and Sathupalli, Motumari–Vishnupuram, and Kazipet–Wangapalli.
He said these sections formed a high-density railway network spanning around 1,500 to 2,000 track kilometres. Therefore, they aligned with standard divisional norms.
He also urged the Centre to review certain redistribution plans. He said the proposed transfer of the Peddapalli–Nizamabad section to the Hyderabad division should be withdrawn and reassigned to Kazipet.
Similarly, he asked authorities to reconsider shifting the Latur Road–Parli Vaijnath section to Nanded Division. He said such moves could affect operational efficiency.
Kazipet railway division demand backed by strategic importance
KTR said Kazipet held strategic importance as it lay at the junction of major railway trunk routes. He noted that infrastructure upgrades had strengthened the region’s capacity.
These included triple line works towards Balharshah and Vijayawada. In addition, the sanctioned quadruple line between Secunderabad and Kazipet had turned the corridor into a high-capacity route.
He also pointed to the establishment of a railway manufacturing unit at Kazipet. Furthermore, facilities such as a Rolling Overhaul shed and locomotive maintenance units at Mahabubabad added to its significance.
Kazipet railway division demand linked to freight potential
KTR said the proposed division would handle freight-heavy routes. These include coal from the Singareni region, along with cement, fertilisers, food grains, and power sector inputs.
He said these routes carried high revenue potential and loading density. Therefore, they required focused administrative oversight.
He concluded that creating a separate division at Kazipet would improve efficiency, reduce operational burden, and support better railway management in Telangana.
