Krishna tribunal deadline extended till July 2026

Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti late Tuesday extended the term of the Brijesh Kumar-led Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II until July 31, 2026.

The extension comes ahead of the tribunal’s current term, which was set to expire on August 1 this year. Exercising powers under Section 5(3) of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, the ministry issued a fresh notification pushing the deadline by nearly a year.

Constituted on April 2, 2004, to resolve Krishna river water allocation between Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, the tribunal had submitted its first report on December 30, 2010. Following objections raised by state governments, a second report was submitted to the Centre on November 29, 2013.

After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the tribunal’s tenure was extended for two years through a government order issued on May 15, 2014, to address water-sharing concerns between the successor states. Since then, with proceedings still underway, the tribunal’s term has been extended annually.
