Hyderabad: In a tragic case of familial neglect, two sisters in Kadapa district’s Rayachoti town died by self-immolation after their father allegedly ignored repeated pleas to arrange their marriages.
The incident took place in SN Colony’s Pujari Banda Street, where the victims 27-year-old Fatima and 25-year-old Afreen lived with their mother. Their father, Sheikh Hussain, had abandoned the family years earlier after marrying a second wife and moving abroad for work.
According to police, Hussain recently returned to India but continued to avoid responsibility for his daughters. On Tuesday night, when the girls’ mother urged him to take initiative for their marriages, Hussain dismissed the concern and left the house. Distressed by their father’s indifference, the sisters reportedly doused each other in petrol and set themselves ablaze while their mother was away.
Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing their screams and shifted both women to a hospital. Afreen succumbed on the way, while Fatima died during treatment.
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation. Locals described the incident as deeply disturbing and blamed the father’s prolonged neglect for pushing the sisters to despair.
