Hyderabad, January 11: With the increasing reliance on smartphones for financial transactions, cybercrimes are rising despite repeated awareness campaigns. One of the latest scams to come to light is the “Jumped Deposit Scam,” which has left many unsuspecting victims in its wake.
The widespread use of UPI services for payments, from small tea stalls to large showrooms, has made digital transactions seamless through platforms like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay. However, cybercriminals are now exploiting this system to deceive users.
In the Jumped Deposit Scam, fraudsters send a small amount of money to the victim’s UPI account. The unsuspecting recipient, curious about the transaction, opens their UPI app to check the balance or transaction history. During this process, they may be prompted to enter their UPI PIN or click on payment-related links sent by the fraudsters.
Once the victim interacts with these fraudulent links or enters their PIN, the cybercriminals gain access to the account and siphon off the entire balance.
Public Awareness Campaign:
To alert the public about this scam, TSRTC Managing Director V.C. Sajjanar recently shared an informative video highlighting how these scams operate and the precautions users must take.
Tips to Stay Safe:
1. Do Not Share UPI PIN: Never share your UPI PIN or account details with anyone, even if they claim to be a bank representative.
2. Avoid Clicking Unknown Links: Ignore links sent by unknown individuals, especially those related to payments or refunds.
3. Verify Transactions Carefully: Always verify the source of unexpected deposits before responding or taking any action.
4. Use Official Channels: Contact your bank directly through official channels for any concerns about UPI transactions.
5. Enable App Security Features: Use biometric authentication and app locks for an added layer of security.
As technology evolves, so do the methods of cybercriminals. Public awareness and vigilance remain critical in combating these threats. Authorities continue to urge users to adopt secure practices and report any suspicious activity immediately.
