Indigo flight disruptions draw apology from chairman Vikram Mehta

Hyderabad: Indigo chairman Vikram Singh Mehta apologised on Wednesday for the Indigo flight disruptions that caused severe inconvenience to passengers over the past week. He said the airline would launch a full investigation with external technical experts to identify the root cause of the breakdown.

Mehta said unexpected developments on December 3 forced the airline to cancel a large number of flights. He noted that thousands of passengers faced delays and missed travel plans. He added that the airline failed to meet public expectations and offered a clear apology in a video message released by the company.

Indigo flight disruptions trigger DGCA scrutiny

The disruptions continued through the week. Thousands of flights were cancelled, including 220 services on a single Wednesday. The DGCA took note of the situation and formed an eight-member team to monitor Indigo’s operations. The regulator also directed CEO Peter Elbers to appear before it on December 11.

Mehta said the airline accepted the criticism and intended to improve systems to prevent similar failures. He added that the board would study all findings from the external probe. Earlier, CEO Peter Elbers said operations were slowly returning to normal after the week-long turbulence.
