Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department alerted several states about rising temperatures and possible heat waves from early March.
Earlier, the weather department predicted stronger rainfall, winter chill and summer heat this year. Accordingly, several regions witnessed heavier rains and colder weather in recent months.
However, temperatures have begun rising rapidly across many parts of the country. In several cities, the sun’s intensity becomes noticeable even by 8 a.m.
As a result, people are finding it difficult to step outdoors during daytime hours. The IMD also said nearly 12 states may record temperatures above normal levels in the coming months.
Experts added that changing climatic conditions over the Pacific Ocean could increase the intensity of heat waves this season.
Heat waves likely in several states
States such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha may record temperatures 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal between March and May.
Meanwhile, officials advised residents in heat-prone regions to remain cautious during peak daytime hours.
Authorities recommended avoiding outdoor activities between noon and 4 p.m. unless necessary. They also advised people to drink sufficient water to prevent dehydration.
Health officials urged elderly persons, children and pregnant women to take extra precautions during intense summer heat.
The weather department also indicated that temperatures may rise further over the next three days and asked people to take preventive measures.
