Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath on Thursday conducted a field inspection of stormwater drains in Banjara Hills following repeated complaints of urban flooding from residents.
Prompted by complaints from residents of Jyoti Nest on Road No. 3, the Commissioner traced the floodwater route from KBR Park and Nandinagar through Banjara Hills to the lake at Jalagam Vengal Rao Park.
He found that the box drain, originally 4 metres wide upstream, had been narrowed to just 2 metres in some stretches near Road No. 3. Similar constrictions were observed along Road Nos. 3 and 14. In one segment, a one-metre-wide pipeline had been laid, aggravating the situation by restricting high-volume flows from upstream areas.
Officials informed Ranganath that in addition to the narrowed structure, the absence of a buffer zone and encroachments along the nala further impeded drainage.
The Commissioner expressed displeasure over the encroachments and ordered a full assessment of the drain’s width from origin to outlet. He directed officials to ensure unobstructed flow and to take corrective measures to prevent future flooding.
