Hyderabad woman loses ₹3.38 lakh in online marriage scam

Hyderabad: A 47-year-old woman from Saidabad was defrauded of ₹3.38 lakh by a man who posed as a UK-based doctor offering marriage via WhatsApp and video calls.

According to police, the accused introduced himself as “Dr. Hirad Ahmed” and used a series of online communications to build trust. He persuaded the victim to open multiple bank accounts and procure SIM cards.

She was then instructed to send ATM cards and passbooks to a fake “UK Affairs Office” address in New Delhi.

Victim lured with fake documents and demands

The fraudster later sent forged marriage and visa papers and demanded payments under various false pretexts. These included visa clearance fees, luggage issues, hotel expenses, and emergency situations.

The woman made several payments before realising she had been duped.

Police warn public against online proposal traps

Officials urged citizens to avoid sharing personal or banking details with strangers online and to remain cautious about unsolicited marriage proposals.
