State plans to make city national hub of film industry, says Bhatti

Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday said the Telangana government plans to make Hyderabad the national hub of the film industry. The initiative aims to position the city as a central destination for film production and employment across all languages.

Hyderabad seen as future-ready film centre

Addressing the Gaddar Film Awards jury at the state Secretariat, Vikramarka said Hyderabad offers better growth potential than Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai. He pointed to the city’s infrastructure and diversity as key strengths.

He stated, “If industries from all regions move here, they will create wide employment for youth writers, technicians, and directors alike.” The government, he added, will soon draw up a blueprint to guide this development.

Film awards revived to support cinema’s social impact

Vikramarka criticised earlier governments for ignoring film awards for decades. He credited Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s administration with restoring the awards system to promote cinema’s role in driving social change.

He described the late Gaddar as an artist who elevated Telangana’s culture and activism globally. “This is why the government chose to name the awards after him,” he said.

He stressed that only talent and transparency will guide award selections. Last year’s jury earned praise for fairness, and this year’s team was appointed after consultation with industry stakeholders through the Film Development Corporation.

He urged the jury to prioritise films that offer strong social messages in addition to commercial success. “Such films will lead the way for meaningful cinema,” he said.

Gaddar Awards screening begins February 6

The state will begin screening films on February 6. The government will host the awards ceremony on March 19 during the Ugadi festival.

Among those present were Film Development Corporation Chairman Dil Raju, I&PR Commissioner Priyanka, FDC Executive Director Kishore Babu, and film figures including Tanikella Bharani, K.S. Rama Rao, Roja Ramani, and Ashok Kumar.
