Hyderabad Cyber Crimes Unit warns public about digital arrest scams

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cyber Crimes Unit issued a public warning about digital arrest scams, urging citizens to stay alert against fraudsters posing as law enforcement officials.

According to the cyber crime unit, scammers impersonate officials from agencies such as police, CBI or customs. They then threaten victims with a fake “digital arrest” through video calls or messages.

Fraudsters typically claim that the victim’s Aadhaar number, bank account or a parcel is linked to a criminal case. Consequently, they pressure victims to remain on a continuous video call and avoid contacting others.

During the scam, fraudsters threaten immediate arrest or legal action to create panic. They then demand money under the pretext of verification, security deposit or case settlement.

Cyber crime officials stressed that genuine police or government agencies never conduct arrests through phone calls or video calls. Moreover, no legitimate officer will demand money to avoid arrest.

Authorities also advised the public not to share OTPs, bank details or personal information with unknown callers.

Officials urged citizens to remain calm if they receive such calls. They advised people to disconnect the call immediately and inform family members or local police.

Victims or suspects of cyber fraud should report the incident by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or visiting the official portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
