Hyderabad CP issues alert over marriage fraud targeting women

Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police Commissioner issued a public alert warning women about rising cases of marriage fraud reported in the city.

In a message posted on X, the Commissioner cautioned young women against deceitful practices carried out under the guise of marriage proposals. He said complaints related to marriage fraud have increased in recent weeks.

Police observed that some offenders first arrange formal bride-viewing ceremonies and even conduct engagements. Thereafter, they build emotional closeness and exploit the trust created by the impending wedding.

According to police inputs, some accused persuade women into physical relationships by assuring that marriage is certain. Subsequently, after exploiting them, they demand large sums of money or additional dowry before proceeding with the wedding.

In several cases, they threaten to cancel the marriage if the demands are not met. Because engagements become public among relatives and friends, many victims hesitate to approach authorities fearing social stigma.

Officials warned that silence only emboldens offenders. Therefore, women and their families should remain vigilant even after engagement and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.

Police advised families not to blindly trust proposals merely because elders arranged them. They urged background verification of the groom’s conduct, habits and associations.

If anyone pressures a woman for money, dowry or a physical relationship before marriage, police asked victims to reject such demands firmly. Moreover, they assured that complaints would remain confidential.
