Hyderabad: The Telangana Horticulture Department will conduct urban farming training on March 14 to promote terrace cultivation and encourage households to grow vegetables.
The programme will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Telangana Horticulture Training Institute (THTI) in Red Hills, Hyderabad.
Officials will organise the session under the “Mana Illu Mana Kuragayalu” initiative. The programme aims to encourage families to grow vegetables at home and improve nutritional intake.
Experts said vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals required for the human body. According to ICMR recommendations, adults should consume about 400 grams of vegetables daily.
This daily intake includes around 100 grams of tubers or root vegetables. It also includes 100 grams of leafy vegetables and 200 grams of other vegetables.
Urban farming training to promote terrace vegetable cultivation
Officials said rapid urbanisation has reduced the availability of land for vegetable cultivation. At the same time, vegetable prices continue to rise in cities.
Therefore, the department plans to encourage terrace gardening and small-scale vegetable cultivation in urban homes.
The urban farming training programme will create awareness about growing quality vegetables on terraces without pesticide residues.
Officials said the initiative will also promote public health. In addition, terrace cultivation can help reduce carbon emissions in urban areas.
The registration fee for the training programme is ₹100.
