High Court issues notice on accreditation card expiry

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Thursday issued notice to the State government over the impending accreditation card expiry scheduled for February 28, 2026.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin heard a petition filed by the Telangana Urdu Working Journalists’ Federation. The Federation raised concerns about the expiration of accreditation cards and alleged violations under the Telangana Media Accreditation Rules, 2025, G.O. Ms No. 252 and its subsequent amendments.

During the hearing, the Court noted submissions that its earlier directions had not been implemented. Therefore, the Bench directed the learned public prosecutor to file a counter-affidavit on or before February 26, 2026. It also instructed all respondents to submit their replies before the next hearing date.

The Court observed that any delay in addressing the accreditation card expiry could deprive journalists of professional access. Considering the February 28 deadline, the Bench advanced the matter and posted it for further hearing on February 26.

Court advances hearing over accreditation card expiry concerns

Although the public prosecutor sought time until March 12, citing another listed matter, the Court declined the request. Instead, it ordered an earlier hearing in view of the approaching accreditation card expiry deadline.

The Federation sought the quashing of G.O. Ms No. 252 and the amended G.O. Rt. No. 103. It also requested directions to prevent the lapse of existing accreditation cards while the case remains pending.

Appearing for the Federation, Advocate Barkat Ali Khan argued that any interruption in accreditation would infringe the fundamental rights to freedom of speech and expression and to life, liberty and dignity under the Constitution. He contended that the government orders violated Articles 14, 16, 19 and 21 and contradicted the governing rules.

The outcome of the February 26 hearing is expected to determine the immediate course of action regarding the accreditation card expiry issue.
