Hyderabad: A sudden downpour on Saturday evening threw large parts of Hyderabad into chaos, as several major roads turned into virtual rivers, leaving commuters stuck in long, frustrating traffic jams.
From Basheerbagh and Lakdikapul to Gachibowli and Banjara Hills, the rain hit hard. Water quickly pooled on the roads, especially in low-lying, high-traffic areas like Liberty, Langar Houz, and Karwan. Drivers had little choice but to inch along or find alternate routes—if they could.
Folks in Secunderabad didn’t fare much better. Places like Bowenpally, Maredpally, Paradise, and Alwal were also hit by heavy rain and flooding, with traffic crawling through waterlogged streets.
Even areas like Nampally, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, and Chandanagar saw steady showers, which, while not as intense, still made evening commutes miserable.
The timing was no coincidence. The India Meteorological Department just confirmed the early arrival of the southwest monsoon, hitting Kerala a full eight days ahead of schedule. That shift is expected to ramp up rainfall across the southern states, including Telangana.
With more rain likely, the Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has put out an orange alert, warning of potential heavy showers over the next five days. Officials are urging people to check traffic updates, steer clear of flooded routes, and avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary, especially in flood-prone neighbourhoods.
For now, all eyes are on the skies—and the drains—hoping the worst is over, but preparing just in case it’s not.
