Health Minister reviews women wellness profiling programme

Hyderabad: Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha reviewed the implementation of the women wellness profiling programme launched by the Telangana government to conduct health screenings for women members of self-help groups across the state.

The minister held a high-level review meeting through video conference from the Secretariat with officials of the Health Department and the Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty.

Health Principal Secretary Christina Z Chongthu, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Dr. Sangeetha Satyanarayana, Aarogyasri CEO Uday Kumar and SERP CEO Divya Devarajan attended the meeting. Meanwhile, District Medical and Health Officers and other officials participated through video conference.

The minister directed SERP officials to arrange vehicles to transport women from villages to hospitals for screening. He also asked them to ensure safe return for the beneficiaries after the tests.

Hospitals must deploy adequate doctors and staff so that women do not face long waiting times. In addition, hospitals should provide chairs, drinking water and other basic facilities.

Officials should follow a proper schedule while bringing women for screening. Therefore, hospitals must avoid bringing large numbers of women on the same day.

Women wellness profiling programme to screen 46 lakh women

If screening identifies any illness, hospitals must begin treatment immediately. The minister also stressed maintaining strict cold-chain protocols while transporting blood samples to laboratories.

Laboratory staff must enter sample data carefully and avoid errors. Meanwhile, District Medical and Health Officers should conduct field visits and monitor the screening process.

Officials must immediately report even minor issues to higher authorities. Consequently, departments can take quick corrective measures.

The Telangana government designed the women wellness profiling programme to detect non-communicable diseases at an early stage and improve women’s health.

Under the programme, authorities will screen nearly 46 lakh women from self-help groups across 542 mandals in 32 districts.

Each beneficiary will undergo around 30 medical tests. These include checks for anaemia, diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid, liver and kidney functions.

The government will implement the programme in two phases. Initially, officials launched the first phase as a pilot in five mandals in each district.

Later, authorities will expand the programme to remaining mandals based on infrastructure and staff availability.

SERP will transport women to nearby Primary Health Centres. Thereafter, registration, check-ups and blood sample collection will take place.

Detailed tests will be conducted through the state’s T-Diagnostics network.

Officials will also create digital health records for beneficiaries using QR codes linked to ABHA IDs on the e-HMIS platform. Women will receive their reports through SMS and the ‘e-Aarogyam’ mobile application.

The digital database will allow women to access their medical records at any government hospital without carrying physical documents.
