Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration issued a health advisory warning the public against unsafe and unsupervised use of Semaglutide, a drug used for weight loss and Type-2 diabetes. The health advisory came amid rising demand and wider availability of the formulation.
Officials stated that Semaglutide remains a prescription-only medicine and requires strict medical supervision. Doctors must assess patients before initiating treatment.
Health advisory highlights risks of improper Semaglutide use
The department said patients must use the drug only under the supervision of an endocrinologist or an internal medicine specialist. In specific cases, cardiologists may also supervise treatment. However, authorities warned people not to self-medicate for weight loss or other purposes.
Officials said improper or unsupervised use can lead to serious health complications. These include acute pancreatitis, kidney injury, severe gastrointestinal reactions, and gallbladder disease. Therefore, patients must follow medical guidance.
The administration directed consumers to purchase the medicine only from licensed medical shops with a valid prescription. At the same time, it cautioned against buying from unregulated online platforms or unauthorised sellers, as such products may be unsafe or substandard.
Further, the department prohibited manufacturers from issuing surrogate advertisements or indirect promotions that encourage off-label use. Officials said such actions may mislead consumers and increase risks.
Authorities also asked the public to report illegal sale, promotion, or misuse of the drug. They reiterated that patients must use the medicine only under proper medical supervision to protect public health.
The advisory was issued in public interest on March 24, 2026, by DCA Director General Shah Nawaz Qasim.
