Hyderabad: BRS leader T. Harish Rao criticised the government over the chana procurement Telangana issue after visiting a procurement centre in Sadashivpet and interacting with farmers.
He visited the DCMS centre at the Rythu Seva Kendram in Sangareddy constituency following complaints that procurement had stopped. Farmers said officials halted purchases citing exhaustion of quota, forcing them to wait for over a week.
During the visit, Harish Rao questioned officials over the halt and sought immediate clarification. Local leaders, including MLAs Chinta Prabhakar and Manik Rao, accompanied him.
Chana procurement Telangana row intensifies over halted purchases
Addressing the media, Harish Rao alleged that the Congress government failed to support farmers. According to him, authorities neither ensured timely inputs nor procured produce at minimum support price.
He warned that farmers may sell chana outside at lower prices, leading to losses of about ₹1,000 per quintal. He also said nearly 60,000 quintals of produce remain with farmers across the state.
Meanwhile, he pointed to delays in maize procurement despite cultivation across 11 lakh acres. Farmers, he said, are selling maize at ₹1,600–1,700 per quintal against the MSP of ₹2,400.
On jowar procurement, he noted that the government has not taken any decision so far. As a result, farmers are travelling to neighbouring states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka to sell produce at lower prices.
Further, he alleged delays in payments and said even procured chana was being returned due to pending bills. Several farmers, he added, have been waiting at centres for days.
Harish Rao demanded that the government immediately resume chana procurement at ₹5,870 per quintal. He also called for opening procurement centres for paddy, jowar, and sunflower without delay.
He urged the Chief Minister to review the situation and take immediate action on procurement issues.
