Hyderabad: Legislative Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy on Monday blamed the sharp rise in corruption across the country on unregulated election spending, calling for intervention from the Supreme Court and the Election Commission.
Speaking at his camp office in Nalgonda, Reddy said unchecked campaign expenditures were the main driver behind growing corruption. “Unless this is addressed, graft will spiral,” he said, urging constitutional bodies to step in.
He criticised the ballooning costs of welfare schemes offered under the guise of free benefits, warning that the country’s economy could collapse under the burden. He flagged large-scale corruption in the engineering department, claiming thousands of crores were being siphoned off through systemic graft.
Reddy also condemned the decline in political discourse, stating that leaders must introspect over the language they use. Public trust in political figures was eroding, he said, and leaders needed to maintain dignity in speech to restore respect.
On the row between MLC K. Kavitha and journalist-turned-politician Teenmaar Mallanna, Reddy said legal action would follow the due process.
He welcomed the state government’s early release of drinking water via the Sagar Left Canal and thanked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy for the decision. With the monsoon already underway, he said the Meteorological Department had predicted heavy rains in the coming days.
