Gandhi Hospital told to compensate victims of expired vaccine case: HRC

Hyderabad: Telangana Human Rights Commission has directed Gandhi Hospital to pay ₹1.25 lakh each to six patients injected with expired Hepatitis B vaccines in 2014–15, calling the incident a clear violation of rights and a breakdown in oversight.

The ruling followed complaints filed by A.N. Adilakshmi, S. Devamani, T. Satish, P. Mallikarjun, T. Ravi, and G. Dhanunjay, who suffered adverse effects after receiving outdated doses. The commission launched a probe and delivered its decision on Thursday.

HRC Chairperson Justice Dr. Shamim Akhtar described the incident as “institutional failure” and said the state’s medical system had failed to uphold patient safety. He ordered disciplinary action against those responsible, including the hospital superintendent.

The commission also instructed the hospital to roll out strict drug management guidelines within two months. The doctor found responsible for the expired vaccine administration has been suspended.
