DCA launches SMS alert system to curb substandard medicines

Hyderabad: The Telangana Drugs Control Administration launched a bulk SMS alert system to curb the sale of substandard medicines across the state.

The new system will allow DCA officials to send immediate alerts to medical shops once they identify medicines that fail quality standards.

Through this digital platform, officials will circulate details of such medicines to pharmacies across Telangana. The alerts will help shop owners stop the sale of these products immediately.

Authorities said the system will help prevent substandard medicines from reaching the public. It will also enable faster action against unsafe drugs.

Officials expect the SMS alerts to reach retail pharmacies and wholesalers within minutes. As a result, pharmacies can quickly remove the flagged medicines from their shelves.

DCA alert system targets substandard medicines

Laboratory tests conducted by the Drugs Control Laboratory sometimes reveal that certain medicines fail quality standards.

In many cases, drugs fail parameters such as assay, disintegration or dissolution during testing.

Regulators classify such products as “Not of Standard Quality” medicines. Authorities then initiate action to prevent their sale in the market.

The new SMS alert system will help officials respond quickly in such situations. It will also ensure that information reaches pharmacies without delay.

The platform will share alerts with retail pharmacies, wholesalers and other stakeholders in the supply chain.

As a result, authorities can withdraw such medicines from the market more efficiently.

Shahnawaz Qasim said the digital system would enable faster sharing of information on substandard medicines.

He added that the initiative would strengthen drug safety monitoring across the state. According to him, the system marks an important step toward protecting public health.
